Venus Optics has announced the Laowa 24mm f/2 Zero-D Tilt-Shift, a full-frame manual-focus lens priced at $1,249. Venus Optics calls it "the fastest tilt-shift lens ever made for any format." That is the company's claim, not something we have tested. Its own store page has an Add to cart button, and Digital Camera World reports it on sale from November 5. Venus Optics gave no separate ship date.

Price and availability

  • Price: $1,249, per Venus Optics
  • Availability: the Venus Optics store page has an Add to cart button, and Digital Camera World reports it on sale from November 5. Venus Optics gave no separate ship date, and we found no B&H listing on November 5

L-mount exclusions

The L-mount version is not compatible with five Panasonic Lumix bodies, Venus Optics says: the S52, S52X, S1M2, S1M2E and S1R2.

Key facts

  • Coverage: full frame, with GFX and XCD medium-format mounts also supported
  • Aperture: f/2 to f/22
  • Movements: ±12mm shift and ±10° tilt, with 360° mount rotation. Venus Optics says tilt and shift trade off against each other and the limits vary slightly by mount
  • On GFX and XCD, the lens keeps ±12mm shift on both axes, with mild corner vignetting at maximum shift
  • Angle of view: 84°
  • Focus: manual, 25cm minimum focus distance, 0.194× maximum magnification
  • Optics: 13 elements in 10 groups, 14 aperture blades
  • Size: 77mm filter thread, 93mm diameter, 119mm long, 860g

How Venus Optics compares it

Venus Optics says similar 24mm tilt-shift lenses stop at f/3.5 and ±8.5° of tilt. This lens opens to f/2 and tilts ±10°, which is the basis of the "fastest" claim. It is a manufacturer comparison, and we did not test it.

Why it matters

A tilt-shift lens lets you correct converging verticals in architecture and adjust the plane of focus. At f/2, this one gives a brighter viewfinder and shallower depth of field than the f/3.5 designs Venus Optics cites. Check the mount list before buying: Panasonic S-series owners should look at the exclusions above. Other recent lens launches include Sigma's 50-120mm F2.8 APS-C zoom and Tamron's 16-50mm F2.8 APS-C zoom.
