Where it fits in Sigma's line
It sits alongside Sigma's 10-18mm F2.8 and 18-50mm F2.8 APS-C zooms, which Sigma says weigh under 1kg together with this lens, and Sigma pitches it as a far smaller stand-in for a 70-200mm F2.8.
Tamron announced the 16-50mm F2.8 A (B091) on October 14, a standard zoom for Sony E, Fujifilm X, Canon RF and Nikon Z. On the three mounts both companies cover (Sony E, Fujifilm X and Canon RF), the two lenses cover different ranges rather than compete directly.
Why it matters
It is a fast telephoto zoom for APS-C. Sigma's own fp2 camera uses L-Mount, which this lens does not cover. The trade-offs are in the controls: Sigma says there is no focus mode switch and no OS switch on the lens, so those settings are changed through the camera. Mounts are limited to Sony E, Fujifilm X and Canon RF. Sigma did not announce a Nikon Z or L-Mount version.
